Voith
Paper to supply of a complete production line to Jiangsu, China
Voith Paper has been commissioned to supply a complete production line, including
stock preparation and finishing, to Jiangsu Province, approx. 220 km to the west
of Shanghai, China. With a wire width of 10,600 mm, a design speed of 1,800 m/min,
the new paper production line will rank among the largest in the world and will
produce art paper. The machine design is based on Voith's One Platform Concept.
The technology for stock preparation of the previous Voith paper machines which
were commissioned by this customer was also decisive for the award of the order
for the stock preparation system from Voith for this latest production line. The
complete fiber lines for bleached hardwood pulp, each with bale handling and pulper
feed system as well as proven TwinFlo double-disk refiner technology, ensure,
together with a likewise completely supplied fiber line for bleached softwood
pulp, the required high finished stock quality in the mixing station. The proven
process modules include pulpers of the VS series and deflakers of the E series.
The scope of supply of the stock preparation system also includes the complete
basic and detail engineering as well as the installation and start-up supervision.
The piping and pumps as well as chests and tanks will also come from Voith. The
paper machine consists of a MasterJet headbox with ModuleJet dilution water control
and a DuoFormer TQv to provide first-class sheet formation. The Tandem NipoFlex
Press ensures maximum dryness and optimum paper quality. This latest production
line will also enjoy the benefits of a modern TopDuoRun dryer section with ProRelease
technology. The paper is pre-coated (film pre-coat) by the SpeedSizer. For the
subsequent blade top coat, DynaCoat with JetFlow F will be used. Both pre-coat
and top-coat coaters are equipped with the Profilmatic C automatic coat CD profile
control system. The paper web is dried by means of gas-fired InfraAir drying hoods
and hot air float dryers. In addition, Voith TTG (Tail Threading Group) will be
providing the customer with an ultramodern threading solution. A Doublehead WaterJet
Tailcutter initiates the threading operation in each section, followed by a high-speed
Flip Tray and VTT Turbo threading belts. As an integral part of the process solution,
the latest rope technology is supplied for the SpeedSizer, the after-dryer groups
and the offline calenders. The automation of the threading operation for the overall
project is provided by Voith Paper Automation. The Sirius reel at the PM with
the Senso Nip Control System ensures excellent roll quality. The Rereeler works
on the Sirius reeling principle as well. It automatically receives parent rolls,
the empty reel spools are also changed automatically. Two Janus MK 2 offline calenders
ensure the required excellent printability and the required high gloss and smoothness
values for the art paper . Without a change to the web run, matt grades can also
be produced. As high-capacity machines, both calenders are equipped with units
for Flying Splice and for automatic set change. The max. operating speed is 1,500
m/min. Two VariPlus center-drum winders with an operating speed of max. 2,500
m/min produce perfectly wound finished rolls. Voith Paper undertakes the major
portion of the automation. For the stock preparation system, Voith supplies the
entire C&I engineering and all C&I field units, such as transmitters and
control valves. The supply includes all protective boxes for solenoid valves and
air distributors as well as the entire installation material for installation
of the C&I equipment. The extensive services cover the PCS acceptance test
(FAT) and the local checks on the machines as well as the C&I start-up. The
machine control system (MNS) is designed on the basis of the PCS7 Platform. A
Wet End Process Control Package (WEP) with sensors also forms part of the scope
of supply as does an EnviroScan (moisture measurement), which can operate under
extreme conditions. Added to this are the CD profile controls, Profilmatic for
ModuleJet, ModuleSteam and ModuleCoat, MD controls, the entire hydraulic and pneumatic
systems, a machine monitoring system (VMM/VTM) and, last but not least, a web
inspection system (WIS). The initial clothing from former to reel will be supplied
by Voith Fabrics. The order will be handled based on the Process Line Package
(PLP). Voith, therefore, takes overall responsibility for the mechanical engineering,
process engineering and control engineering of the production process. Start-up
is scheduled for the first half of 2005.

SCA and Paper Workers' Union reach agreement on cooperation
SCA has signed a Global Agreement with the International Federation of Chemical,
Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM), which represents 20 million members
worldwide, the Swedish Paper Workers' Union and SCA's European Works Council.
"The agreement supplements the Code of Conduct adopted by the SCA Board of
Directors earlier this year," says CEO Jan Astrom in a statement. "The
agreement is an expression of SCA's willingness to assume social responsibility
and act as an exemplary employer." Fred Higgs, General Secretary of ICEM,
maintains that these types of agreements are of crucial interest to workers worldwide,
but they also lend greater credibility to SCA's ability to live up to its ethical
guidelines. Sune Ekbage, Chairman of the Swedish Paper Workers' Union, considers
that "it is natural for a Swedish company such as SCA, with a long tradition
of favorable relations with trade unions, to sign an agreement that ensures workers'
rights I am convinced that this will favor SCA and it has come at exactly the
right time, in view of the discussions concerning ethical guidelines currently
under way in Sweden." Carl Lindqvist, Chairman of SCA's European Works Council
(EWC), issued the following comment: "For us employees, it is reassuring
that SCA has signed an agreement concerning its relations with employees and trade
union organizations, particularly now that the company is growing fast in parts
of the world where workers' rights are not a matter of course." The agreement,
which is based on the SCA Code of Conduct and the labor standards adopted by the
International Labor Organization (ILO), was signed between SCA and ICEM, the Swedish
Paper Workers' Union and SCA's EWC, and covers SCA's entire organization. The
agreement will be translated and made available at all workplaces in the Group.

Grunewald
Papier increases paper production with Andritz High-Temperature Hood
In April 2003, Andritz AG supplied an EquiDry F high-temperature hood to Papierfabrik
Gebr. Grunewald for its PM1 in Kirchhundem, Germany. PM1 is a 4,8 m machine producing
machine-glazed food wrapping paper. One year later, it's has been established
that the EquiDry F is responsible for a production increase of more than 25% on
PM1. PM1 has now become one of the highest capacity MG machines in Europe. The
capacity increase makes it possible for Grunewald Papier to serve a larger group
of customers. Specially treated recycled fibers are used as the raw material for
PM1. The EquiDry F hood is equipped with controllable edge zones for profile correction
and was installed in the course of a multi-stage investment program, with the
aim of increasing the capacity of PM1. It replaces the steam-heated hood supplied
by Andritz in 1976. For Grunewald Papier, the decisive factors for choosing the
EquiDry F hood were the customized solution and the confidence they have in the
Andritz drying technology.
